JUNIOR CLASS MECHANICAL SCIENCES RULES AND CLASSIFICATIONS

Department 24

MECHANICAL PROJECTS

RULES:

1.     All State of Wisconsin and Jefferson County Fair rules apply. Both sets of rules are located in the front of this book. In addition the following rules will also be enforced.

2.     Open to members enrolled in the specific project areas as listed or members of youth groups doing similar work.

3.     All poster sizes are to be 14"x22" using poster board.

4.     No Advertising in displays.

Class A - Tractor

Lot #

1.     Mounted exhibit of used engine parts, labeled, with written explanation of the cause of wear or damage.

2.     Display board showing different kinds of nuts, bolts, screws, rivets and other fasteners used on farm machinery, properly labeled.

3.     Tractor safety display (poster, scrapbook, photos, etc.)

4.     Any other display related to tractors or tractor safety.

Premiums: Class A (face to face) $2.50-2.25-2.00-1.50

 

Class B - Automotive

Lot #

1.     Exhibit showing blind driveways or obstructed intersections. Use model buildings, cars, trees, etc.

2.     Exhibit with information on car costs; such as gasoline consumption, tire service records, seasonal service, etc.

3.     Exhibit of 4 worn out or damaged auto parts with an explanation of cause of wear or damage.

4.     Any other display pertaining to the automotive project.

Premiums: Class B (face to face) $2.50-2.25-2.00-1.50

 

Class C - Bicycle

All youth in Bicycle - Mechanical Science and in Adventures 5 Bicycling will show together. Entry should be made here.

Lot #

1.     Poster or display identifying the parts of a bicycle

2.     Display on the care and maintenance of a bicycle

3.     Display on safe bicycle operation

4.     A study project on the types of bicycles, past and present

5.     Develop a plan for a bike trip (one day or over night) with supply list, map and all things necessary for survival

6.     Develop a plan for an obstacle course or Bike Rodeo, with supply list, diagrams, rules and scoring procedure

7.     Any other display pertaining to the bicycle or bicycle safety

Premiums: Class C (face to face) $2.00-1.75-1.50-1.25

 

Class D - Aerospace

RULES:

1.     An exhibitor enrolled in one aerospace unit may enter projects in any aerospace unit.

2.     No exhibit shall be entered in more than one lot number.

3.     Commercial built models are not eligible for entry. Models must be built by the exhibitor using kits, plans or self design.

4.     Non-flying scale models should be entered in Class E - Scale Models.

5.     Airplanes may have been flown but must be clean and in good repair for judging and exhibit at the fair.

6.     NO LIVE ROCKET ENGINES will be allowed in the model rocketry displays.

7.     Rockets with a one-piece plastic fin assembly are not eligible for entry.

Premiums: Class D (Face to Face) $2.00-1.75-1.50-1.25

Unit 1 - Model Airplanes

Lot #

1.     Flying model airplane for display Balsa or Balsa & foam construction

2.     Flying model airplane for display Balsa stick and tissue construction

3.     Radio control or Control line airplane for display

Unit 2 - Model Rocketry

4.     Flying model rocket built from a kit

5.     Flying model rocket of self-design.

6.     Rocket launch pad. (Self design pad and wiring)

7.     Any other exhibit pertaining to model rocketry

Unit 3 - Flying

8.     Poster or display illustrating the principles of flight

9.     Poster or display identifying the major structural parts of an airplane

10.  Any other exhibit pertaining to model rocketry

 

Class E - Scale Models

RULES:

1.     No more than 3 entries per exhibitor. Only one entry per lot number

2.     The largest scale to be used is 1/12 scale. (1" equals 1')

3.     First yr. modelers can build a Snap-Tite kit, but must follow rule 4.

4.     All models must be completely painted.

5.     Each exhibit must be accompanied by a 3x5 card with the following information: 1) Difficulties in building the model, 2) Manufacturer of kit (box name, kit number, etc.) 3) Type of paint used and how applied, 4) Finishing procedures after built (decals, sealers, etc.), 5) Any help in building the kit.

 

DEFINITIONS:

 KIT - taking 1 or more models and combining them into one scale model. Model   MUST be painted.

 CUSTOM BUILT - starting with a kit or a model and completely changing or modifying its appearance.

 SCRATCH BUILT - buying or making individual parts and building a scale model.

Class F – Lego/Knex

Rules:

No building instructions allowed.  Must be own creation.

1.     Lego Creation – minimum 100 pieces & max size 12” x 12”

2.     Knex Creation – minimum 75 pieces & max size 18” x 18”

Premiums: Class F (face to face) $2.50-2.25-2.00-1.75

 

Class G - Small Engines

Unit 1 - Operation and Maintenance

Lot #

 1  Panel exhibit of small engine parts with identification of parts

 2  Poster illustrating steps in a small engine service job

 3  Poster showing correct steps in preparing a small engine for off-season storage.

 4  Small engine safety poster

Premiums: Class G - Unit I (face to face) $2.00-1.75-1.50-1.25

 

Unit 2 - Power and Design

 5 Panel exhibit showing diagram of ignition, fuel or lubrication systems (actual parts may be shown)

 6 Panel showing worn or faulty engine parts with a statement as to cause and prevention

 7   Poster showing events in a four-cycle engine with a brief explanation

 8   Small engine safety poster

 

Unit 3 - Two Cycle Engines

 9   Poster showing events in a two-cycle engine with a brief explanation

10  Panel exhibit of carburetor parts with explanation of function of parts, float or diaphragm type

11  Poster listing preventative maintenance measures recommended for two-cycle engines

12  Safety poster on chain saw use, outboard motors, or motorcycle, ATV or snowmobile.

Premiums: Class G - Units 2 & 3 (face to face) $2.50-2.25-2.00-1.75

 

Class H Diorama

DIORAMAS

RULES:

1.     Limited to not larger than 3’ by 3’

2.     Dioramas to be judged on construction and props.

3.     Exhibitor to bring model of proper scale, but model will not be part of judging - model cannot be entered in two lot numbers.

4.     Must be secured down with either wire or glued down, and must be already together before coming to fair.
