JUNIOR CLASS FLOWERS & HOUSE PLANTS RULES AND CLASSIFICATIONS

 

2008-2009

Department 15

FLOWERS & HOUSE PLANTS

 

RULES:

1.     All State of Wisconsin and Jefferson County Fair rules apply. Both sets of rules located in the front of this book. In addition the following rules will also be enforced:

2.     Exhibits must be checked in by 6:30 p.m. MONDAY and judged Face to Face by 7:00 p.m.

3.     This department is open to members enrolled in the House Plant Project or members of other youth groups doing equivalent work.

4.     PLEASE do not bring pots or vases of value to the fair. All containers are brought at the owner's risk and should be identified with the owner’s name on each piece.  Potted plants should have appropriate drain dishes under the pot.

5.     Plants and pots must be clean and free from insects and disease.  Unhealthy plants will be disqualified and sent home by the superintendent.

6.     All plants and flowers must be identified with COMMON NAME, GENUS, AND SPECIES (if known) on a 3x5 card.  Cards will be available during check-in.

7.     Refer to publication A2935 Evaluating and Judging Flowers and Indoor Plants (available through the Jefferson County Extension Office) as a guide.

CLASS A - Growing House Plants: Grade 3-6

CLASS B - Growing House Plants: Grade 7 & up

 

Rules

In addition to the general rules for Dept 15, the following rules also apply:

1.     Potted plants must also be identified with information pertaining to the purchase date, propagation method and care of plant.

2.     Plants must have been propagated from stem, leaf cutting or root division and be at least 6 months old.  Purchased plants must have been purchased by February 1 of the current year.

3.     All plants must be firmly rooted in potting soil.

4.     All potted plants must be grown indoors.

CLASS C – Specimen Blooms

RULES:

In addition to the general rules for Dept 15 the following rules also apply:

1.     Open to members enrolled in flower projects or to members of other youth groups doing equivalent work.

2.     Exhibitors shall furnish their own CLEAR containers and display with foliage above water line.  Container and water line should be suitable to stem length and to avoid being blown over.  Water level should be maintained throughout the fair.

3.     Specimen blooms that wilt or dry up will be removed from exhibition.  You may refresh your bloom with an identical bloom.  Contact Superintendent if you plan to refresh your exhibit.

CLASS D - Arrangements

RULES:

 In addition to general rules for Dept 15, the following also apply to this class:

1.     An arrangement is composed of three parts: a container, an anchor substance, and materials (flowers) being presented.

2.     No artificial materials to be used unless accessories are specified as being permitted.

3.     Use of any protected or endangered wild flower will automatically disqualify the entry.
