JUNIOR CLASS CULTURAL ARTS RULES AND CLASSIFICATIONS

 

2008-2009

Department 18

CULTURAL ARTS

RULES:

1.     All State of WI and Jefferson County Fair rules apply. Both sets of rules are located in the front of this book. Please note rules 10 (Exhibits not fulfilling all department requirements will be lowered one placing) & 11 (Articles entered in the incorrect lot number will not be allowed to be judged unless an Exception notice was filled out by July 1st and will then be judged for ribbon only.)  In addition the following rules will also be enforced.

2.     Any article entered in a wrong category, without an exception notice as stated above, will be given a participation ribbon only, with no premium.

3.     Open to members enrolled in (Celebrate Art or Art in Your Future- 4-H programs) or members of other youth groups doing similar work.

4.    Exhibitors may enter any class and lot numbers appropriate for age with a maximum of 30 projects.  During Face to Face judging, exhibitor can only have 10 projects judged at one sitting.  All exhibitors will have equal opportunity to spend time with a judge.

5.     All projects in art and craft exhibits must be made by exhibitor within the current project year.

6.     Exhibits may be assembled from pre-cut materials or kits UNLESS IT IS SPECIFIED, NO KITS.

7.     Exhibits will be pre-fair judged.

8.     Scrapbook photos and pages taken/made in the past year (since last fair).

9.     Any entry that does not fit in any class below may be considered Educational-In Depth, Department 33.

10.  Entry tags are to be attached to exhibits PRIOR to judging of the items.  Framed artwork tags should hang on the FRONT LEFT.

11.  Projects in Class P (and all framed artworks) will be lowered one ribbon placement if these rules are not followed:

a.        Artwork MUST BE READY to hang on fair bulletin boards.  Artwork must have a heavy string or wire loop attached securely that will be strong enough to support the artwork submitted.  This should be done prior to judging (there will be string and tape available at tables before entering the judging area, but this may not be suitable for hanging all artwork.)  Once work has been judged, if the hanging device does not hold up, there will be a lowering of premium. 

b.       Entry tags are to be attached to exhibits PRIOR to judging of the items.  Framed artwork tags should hang on the FRONT LEFT.  Each work will be lowered one placing if superintendents need to mover the tag to correct area.

Premiums: Classes A-Q (Face to Face) $2.50-2.25-2.00-1.75

Premiums: Classes R&S (Face to Face) $3.00-2.75-2.50-2.25

Class A - Leathercraft

RULES:

1.     All exhibits must be of genuine leather.

2.     Entries to consist of one article unless designated otherwise.

3.     Members may use kits (precut, but not pre-stamped) on all lot numbers, unless stated NO KITS.

 

Lot #      

1.     Any article without lacing or stitching (ex: bookmark, single key case, set of 4 coasters or similar article).

2.     Any article with lacing or stitching (ex: pen & pencil case, coin purse, axe sheath, comb case, scissors case, luggage tag).

3.     Any belt, collar or similar article with buckle

4.     Any article with stained or colored leather

5.     Any article not made from a kit

 

Class B - Stencil Painting

RULES:

1.     Stencils are to be shown with the article

2.     Each article exhibited must feature a different design

3.     Article may be functional or decorative

4.      If article is too large to bring (wall stenciling, large furniture) a sample of the stencil (on like material) and pictures of the article or project should be brought to the fair with the stencil.

5.     All articles must be hand stenciled using brush or sponge technique.

Lot #

1.     Any article of clothing using purchased stencil

2.     Any article of fabric (not to be worn) using purchased stencil

3.     Any article of wood using a purchased stencil

4.     Any article using a hand cut stencil

5.     Any other article not listed above

 

Class C - Macramé

Lot #

1.     Plant hanger. Display with appropriate container, may be empty. “S” hook required.

2.     Functional small accessory for use in the home (pot holder mat, etc.)

3.     Decorative accessory item for use in home

4.     Any personal accessory item (belt, jewelry, purse, etc.)

5.     Any other item-may not be item that will fit into any of the above listed items (table, lamp, etc.)

 

 

Class D – Ceramics

RULES:

1. All articles must be original work of exhibitor.

Lot #

1.     Any item, bisque stain, l firing (could be antique)

2.     Any item, greenware, underglaze, 2 firings

3.     Any item, greenware, glazed, 2 firings

4.     Any item, greenware, combination of stain (50%) and glaze (50%)

5.     Any other item using techniques not described above

 

Class E - Creative Stitchery

RULES:

 1. Items may be from a kit or pattern book

Lot #

1.     Embroidery work (using embroidery thread on pre-printed fabric)

2.     Crewel (embroidery with yarn)

3.     Counted cross stitch-small item (5x7 of smaller)

4.     Counted cross stitch-large item (larger than 5x7)

5.     Any item made from plastic canvas

6.     Needlepoint, Bargello, Half Cross, etc.

7.     Any other method of creative stitchery not listed above. Include 3x5 card explaining article and process.

 

Class F - Clay/Pottery

Lot #

1.     Hand built pottery using pinch, coil or slab method

2.     Jewelry

3.     Decorated clay tiles

4.     An article using a combination of techniques

5.     A free form sculpture

6.     A thrown piece (i.e. done on a potters wheel)

7.     Handmade dough or Clay Art

 

Class G - Fabric

Lot #      

1.     A tye-dyed item

2.     A block print item on fabric

3.     A fabric item with original design, paint or liquid embroidery

4.     Silk screen on fabric

5.     A batik item

6.     Any other item not listed above

 

Class H - Fiber

1.     A hand-woven item using fabric or yarn (ex. basket, etc.)

2.     Basketry - any technique using reed or wood

Class J - Metal

Class M – Printmaking

RULES:

If any of these articles are framed and to be hung on the wall, please see Class P for rules on        hanging your artwork.

The Following Lot Numbers are related to Music & Drama and judged on Monday Pre-Fair Face to Face

Class P - Drawing & Painting

RULES:

1.     Projects in Class P (all framed artworks) will be lowered on ribbon placement if the rules are not followed:

a.        Artwork must be ready to hang on fair bulletin boards.  Hundreds of framed artworks are entered for display.  Artwork must have a heavy string or wire loop attached securely that will be strong enough to support the artwork submitted.  This should be done prior to judging (if it hangs at home, it will probably be good for fair).  There will be string and tape available at tables before entering the judging area, but this may not be suitable for hanging all artworks.  Once work has been judged, if the hanging device does not hold up, there will be a lowering of premiums.

b.       String & Tape are not acceptable in many cases.  Pop tabs, paper clips, with hot glue are not acceptable.  Push-in hangers on foam board pull out too easily to hang artwork on fair bulletin boards.

2.     Entry tags are to be attached to exhibits PRIOR to judging of the items.  Framed artwork tags should hang on the FRONT LEFT.  Each work will be lowered one level if superintendents need to move the tag to correct area.

3.     Pictures that are 'wet and tacky' will not be accepted.

4.     Fasten entry tag on upper right hand corner on the back of the picture so that it can be flipped to the front to be exposed on the upper left corner to save damage to the front of the picture.

5.     Sketchbook entries are to be done in a variety of mediums. Suggestions could be (but not limited to): pencil, pen and ink or fine point markers. Intermediate and older members are encouraged to use multiple mediums when drawing sketches.

6.     Sketches are to be as follows: grade 3-5 (6-10 sketches); grade 6-8 (20 sketches); grade 9 & up (30 sketches)

7.     Sketchbooks should not be limited to a full-scale drawing, but a practice book to improve an idea or technique. The sketchbook should be part of a thought process to complete a central idea. Don't limit your ideas or subject.

Rules:

1.     Open to members enrolled in CREATIVE WRITING

2.     *Items are included in the Project Literature (Creative Wordworking or Crazy About Books)

LOT #

1.     * A “commonplace book”

2.     * Original poetry item: “found” poem; nature poem, cinquaine, telephone or vertical poem

3.     A poster of display about proper e-mail etiquette

4.     * A poster or display of what to include in a journal or diary (do NOT include the journal or diary)

5.     * A handmade “few kind words” book

6.     Any other piece of original creative writing (poem, short story, essay or play)

7.     * Handwritten “imaginary letter”

The following projects must include a 3x5 card with information on all books read for that entry: (1) Authors, (2) Title of book(s), and (3) Brief description about the book(s).

8.     * A display describing a community service project where you shared your love for books

9.     * Book Review

10.  * Create a book cover illustration

11.  * Amazing Words poster

12.  * Reading scrapbook or collage

13.  * Top 10 Poster

 

CLASS R & S

MUSIC & DRAMA

     Judged Thursday Afternoon/evening during Fair

Rules:

1.     Judging is Face to Face Thursday afternoon/evening.  All exhibitors are required to perform or present their exhibits for judging during Fair.

2.     Exhibitors may perform pieces of their choice that has not previously been performed at county fair.  State Qualifiers for Solo/Ensemble MAY NOT perform their qualifying piece for judging.

3.     All performers MUST provide a performance copy for the Judge.  Photocopy and editing are acceptable.  Example:  vocal solo-words and score; Reading-Actual reading; Dance-score with steps outlined, etc.  Contact superintendent if you have questions.

4.     Time limit: Grades 3-5: no less than 1 minute or more than 4 minutes; Grades 6 and up:  no less than 2 minutes or more than 7 minutes; Group Performances:  not less than 2 minutes or more than 10 minutes. 

5.     Lip-syncing in NOT allowed.

6.     Accompaniment may be on tape/CD.  An adult piano accompanist may be used.  All other instrumental accompanists must be a junior exhibitor and must enter and will be judged as a group.  Tape/CD background vocals only are allowed.

7.     A Photo of Exhibitor is to be submitted to Superintendents or Fair office by Monday of Fair week for display of awards.  Picture may be picked up after 7:00 p.m. on Sunday of Fair. 

8.     You will receive a letter with additional performance information prior to fair.

9.     Ribbons and Awards will be presented at the end of judging Thursday night.

10.  Failure to follow the above rules will result in the entry lowered one placing. 

 

Class R – Music Performance - Includes vocal, musical theatre, piano, and instrumental solos, duets, group and dance (Judge will ask for years of experience)
